What the records show

Scrap metal is the one line on the town sheet that would make a business owner smile: 206 tons in 2023 for $28,742, about $140 a ton, and more than every other commodity combined. Metal recycling is fully real. Steel and aluminum remelt without losing quality, and there is always a buyer.

The odd part is cans. The center collects aluminum and steel cans, and the sheet shows zero tons of either shipped in 2023. The manager's answer, September 2026: cans get packed and held until there's enough for a pickup to make sense, and the next shipment will show in the 2026-27 reporting. The 2024 report bears that out: aluminum did ship that year, 15 tons for $18,426.40, the best per-ton price of anything the center sells. Steel cans still show none. Aluminum cans go to Casella under the town's contract. Whether steel cans and the scrap metal pile are part of that contract or go to a separate scrap dealer is still open.
